Tier 1
The purposely built target handguns are the best for ISSF/Olympics shooting disciplines. These include: Pardini SP, Walther GSP/GSP Expert/GSP 500/SSP, Feinwerkbau AW93, FAS 6007, Hammerli 208/215/International, Unique DES 69. Morini CM22, MatchGun MG2/MG2e, IZH35 just to name a few.
Tier 2
The next choice would be the pistols with target shooting in mind, and includes: Smith Wesson Mod 41, Browning Medalist/Buckmark, many High Standard models, Ruger Mk (x) variants, Colt Woodsman, Margolin MCM and many more.
Tier 3
Training and competing with some generic or variants from 9mm pistols is possible, especially when that is what you can find. Examples include CZ 75/shadow Kadet, CZ P09, Walther P22, GSG 1911 and many more. You examples of Glock 44 and SW SP22x will work. Even a .22LR revolver can be used for training and competition. Obviously the pistols in this group will be less competitive than the other groups, but nevertheless they for the purpose.
I strongly suggest to start with tier 1 but if you are only able to find something else I guess that is okay to grab anyone and start training and competing. It is a difficult time for Canadians to enter the sport under the current legislations.
Should you have choices of pistols to start, you might want to talk to a certified pistol coach for further details about which one fits you the best.
